Deck Building Basics

Building a YuGiOh Genesys deck follows similar principles to traditional Yu-Gi-Oh!, with the addition of point management. Here's everything you need to know to construct your first competitive deck.

Deck Size Requirements

Main Deck

  • Minimum: 40 cards
  • Maximum: 60 cards
  • Recommended: 40-45 cards for consistency

Extra Deck

  • Maximum: 15 cards
  • Allowed Types: Fusion, Synchro, Xyz only
  • Banned: Link and Pendulum Monsters

Side Deck

  • Maximum: 15 cards
  • Purpose: Matchup-specific tech cards
  • Important: Side Deck points count toward your 100-point total

Step-by-Step Deck Building

Step 1: Choose Your Strategy

Start with a core strategy or archetype:

  • Control Decks: Focus on disruption and resource management
  • Combo Decks: Build powerful boards through card interactions
  • Aggro Decks: Fast-paced beatdown strategies
  • Midrange Decks: Balanced approach with flexibility

Step 2: Select Your Core Engine

Choose 15-25 cards that form your deck's foundation:

  • Main archetype monsters (usually 0 points)
  • Key spell/trap support
  • Core combo pieces
  • Engine starters and extenders

Step 3: Allocate Your Points

Decide how to spend your 100-point budget:

Typical Distribution:

Power Cards (40-50 points):
- 1-2 high-impact cards (20-30 pts each)
- Format staples for your strategy

Consistency Cards (30-40 points):
- Draw cards (e.g., Pot of Desires)
- Hand traps (e.g., Ash Blossom)
- Disruption tools

Reserve (10-20 points):
- Side Deck options
- Tech card flexibility

Step 4: Add Staples and Tech Cards

Include supporting cards (many are 0 points):

  • Generic removal
  • Protection cards
  • Board breakers
  • Tech cards for the current meta

Step 5: Build Your Extra Deck

Select up to 15 Extra Deck monsters:

  • Generic power cards (may have point costs)
  • Archetype-specific Extra Deck monsters (often 0 points)
  • Toolbox options for various situations
  • Remember: Points for Extra Deck cards count toward your 100-point total

Step 6: Prepare Your Side Deck

Select up to 15 cards for specific matchups:

  • Anti-meta cards
  • Additional disruption
  • Matchup-specific counters
  • Critical: Budget 10-15 points for Side Deck cards

Point Management Strategies

Conservative Approach (60-80 points)

  • Leaves room for adjustments
  • Flexible Side Deck options
  • Good for new players learning the format

Optimal Approach (80-95 points)

  • Uses most available resources
  • Requires careful planning
  • Most competitive decks target this range

Maximum Approach (95-100 points)

  • Uses every available point
  • Highly optimized
  • Limited Side Deck flexibility

Common Beginner Mistakes

Mistake #1: Overspending Points Early

Problem: Using all 100 points on power cards without consistency Solution: Balance power with free draw spells and searchers

Mistake #2: Ignoring the Side Deck

Problem: No points budgeted for side deck tech cards Solution: Reserve 10-15 points for side deck options

Mistake #3: Deck Too Large

Problem: Running 60-card decks reduces consistency Solution: Stick to 40-45 cards unless playing a specific strategy

Mistake #4: Not Testing Point Allocations

Problem: Deck feels inconsistent or too weak Solution: Playtest and adjust point distribution iteratively
