Point System
How the Point System Works
The point system is the heart of YuGiOh Genesys format. It creates strategic deck building decisions by assigning point costs to powerful cards while keeping most cards free.
Point Categories
Free Cards (0 Points)
- Most cards in the game cost 0 points
- Unlimited use within the standard 3-copy limit
- Forms the foundation of your deck strategy
- Examples: Most archetype cards, basic staples, combo pieces
Low Point Cards (1-20 Points)
- Commonly played staples
- Strong hand traps and disruption
- Popular tech choices
- Example: Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring (15 pts - official value)
Medium Point Cards (21-50 Points)
- Very powerful cards with format-defining effects
- Cards that were previously Limited or Semi-Limited
- High-impact tech cards
- Point values vary based on tournament performance
High Point Cards (51-100+ Points)
- Extremely powerful game-warping cards
- Previously Forbidden cards
- Cards that can win games single-handedly
- Example: Abyss Dweller (100 pts - official value)
Point Calculation Rules
Basic Rules
- Each copy of a card costs points individually
- Running 3 copies of a 10-point card = 30 points total
- Point cap applies to Main Deck + Extra Deck + Side Deck combined
- The standard 3-copy limit per card still applies
- You cannot exceed the point cap (default 100 points)
Tournament Variations
- Standard Events: 100-point cap
- Custom Events: Tournament organizers can set any point cap
- Zero-Point Events: Some events use only 0-point cards
Point List Updates
Update Frequency
The official point list is updated every 4-6 weeks by Konami based on:
- Tournament results and win rates
- Meta game impact analysis
- Community feedback
- Card usage statistics

Strategic Considerations
Point Budget Allocation
A typical competitive deck point distribution:
Power Cards (40-50 points):
- 1-2 high-impact formerly banned cards
- Essential format staples
Consistency Cards (30-40 points):
- Draw cards and searchers
- Hand traps for disruption
Free Cards (0 points):
- Core archetype engine
- Tech choices
- Basic utility cards
Common Approaches
High Power Approach
- Use most of your 100 points on powerful cards
- Rely on free consistency cards
- High ceiling, potential consistency issues
Balanced Approach
- Distribute points across power and consistency
- Most competitive decks use this strategy
- 60-80 points total is common
Low Point Approach
- Use mostly 0-point cards
- Save points for specific counters in Side Deck
- Maximum consistency, lower power ceiling
